Rewards Parents Can Offer for a Job Well Done
Offering appropriate support to a career explorer is essential to progress. While always well-intended, not all intervention and advice is helpful. Career Services has suggestions for appropriate rewards and interventions:
- Assist with career exploration transportation expenses.
- Purchase field-specific supplies.
- Give a book voucher or bookstore gift certificate.
- Fund a road trip to expand student horizons.
- Offer understanding, encouragement, and verbal support, without doing the explorer's work.
- Present a gift subscription to a trade publication.
- Support membership in a professional association by paying the dues.
- Buy the basics for a professional wardrobe: conservative suit, shoes, shirts, briefcase, and portfolio.
- Praise the student who chooses a career path and major based on deliberate completion of the step by step career exploration process, beginning with self assessment. Applied self-knowledge is the basis for career satisfaction.
