Get to Know the New Assistant Director and Liaison to the College of Liberal Arts
As we begin this new academic year, I want to take a moment to introduce myself to the students, faculty, and staff in the College of Liberal Arts.
My name is Stephanie Spencer, and I am delighted to be the new Assistant Director-Liaison to COLA in Career Services. Since joining the staff at Career Services this summer, I have had the opportunity to meet with many students in advising appointments, and I look forward to getting to know many more members of the College of Liberal Arts community as the year progresses.
As a former liberal arts student myself, I understand the amazing benefits of this type of education, as well as the challenges it can present when transitioning into the world of work. I’ve also worked with Liberal Arts and Sciences students in my previous position as a career advisor in Indiana, prior to making the move to the Dayton area in June, to join the staff at Career Services.
If you’ve not yet been in to the Career Services office, make this the quarter that you do something smart for yourself and your career, and call (937) 775-2556 to schedule an appointment to meet with me to discuss résumés, job search strategies, interviewing, or how to turn the skills you’ve learned in the classroom into a great career.
Our mission in Career Services is to help you prepare for the world of work, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to assist each of you in your own career exploration and job search!
Resource Corner: LinkedIN Professional Networking Online
You may have heard the old adage “It’s not what you know but who you know,” or that the most effective way to secure a job is through networking. If so, you’ve heard right! And while it is certainly possible to obtain employment by responding to the wanted ads, its quicker and a more effective and efficient use of your time to reach out to those in your network, as well as form new connections with professionals in your career field. One online resource that exists to help you with professional networking is LinkedIn.
Unlike Facebook or MySpace or other social media sites, LinkedIn is designed to be a professional and career focused version of social media. Your profile mimics a résumé, you can receive recommendations for the work you’ve done, and employers can find potential job candidates using the search feature. But most importantly, you can use this site to reach out to professionals in your field to network, learn more about the industry, and create a professional presence on the Web.
LinkedIn provides you with the opportunity to join networking groups in order to engage in discussions in your area of interest; there are groups for those interested in Green Jobs (an environmentally friendly workforce), careers in publishing and editing, working with a non-profit, and many groups focusing on international affairs, public policy, and communications. There are also groups to connect alumni from institutions of higher learning. Did you know that WSU has 18 groups on LinkedIn, including one for WSU students who have studied abroad? These groups are great ways to find alumni and professionals working in your field who are usually very willing to discuss their career path with students.
You can use LinkedIn to find an old supervisor whom you’ve lost touch with but know will be a great connection during your job search. This site can also be used to do research on a particular company and reach out to individuals who are currently working for that company. There are many uses of LinkedIn, and if you are trying to create a professional network and learn about your chosen career field, this is a great site to take advantage of!
Career Tip for the Quarter: Networking for Shy People
Breaking Outside Your Shell
Q: What are the best ways to network for shy people?
A: Networking works when it is authentic and comfortable. So if you’re shy, cold-calling, large mixers, and public forums may not be good choices.
Try group environments where you know some but not all people; you can practice mixing and there will be people there helping you along. Also, try group activities that you really enjoy (e.g., company softball league); you will have the activity in common as the natural icebreaker.
Finally, put yourself in situations where people have to come to you: Volunteer to organize a company party or put a candy dish on your desk.
