Job Postings and Job Search Sites

You may find opportunities through job postings online and in newspapers. At minimum, a job posting should include the job title, description, requirements, application deadline, application instructions and contact information.

You will have already identified suitable career paths. Now look for job postings in those fields of interest. If 'requirements' are posted, you will need the listed requirements to qualify. If 'preferred' skills or qualifications are included, they are not necessary, although candidates with them may be given priority.

If you notice frequently repeated 'requirements' that you do not have, you must reconsider your targeted career path or develop a plan for meeting the requirements.

Traditional Resources for Job Postings

Most job seekers are familiar with newspapers. Professional association publications usually post job openings for members. Trade papers and magazines for the field are also excellent resources. Most of these resources will have electronic equivalents.

Electronic Job Postings

Electronic job posting services are numerous. So are the job seekers who use them. Consequently, an electronically posted job often results in a huge number of applicants. If application is to be made electronically, you must determine the privacy policy prior to application and pay close attention to the formatting requirements and reviewing methods for the application. Career Services recommends against using services which charge fees.

Career Services maintains The Wright Search, a job posting database. The Wright Search also allows students to post résumés, which are reviewed by participating employers. In addition, Career Services evaluates many job posting sites on a regular basis and posts links that serve the goals of Wright State University students and alumni.
